Book shelf decor ideas

My Billy book case draws a lot of attention from friends and family. I know bookshelves are for shelving your books (no brainer), but some people like to make it the centre piece for their living room and decorate it to display their taste, creativity and lifestyle AND store their favorite books. The minimalist look is what attracts me. Here goes.

1. Always start with an empty bookcase. I like to visualise the look before I start putting things together.

2. Decide on a colour scheme depending on the colour of your walls. My walls are beige and the white Billy Bookcase from IKEA worked well.

3. Treat every shelf as a blank canvas and decide the artwork you will have on display. It doesn’t have to be a line of books. Make it your own by adding a personal item like your favourite Forever Friends teddy bear.

4. Decorate by a certain theme. I chose everything sweet and girly like a little girl. Cherubs add such magic to book shelves.

5. Bookshelves doesn’t need to be only about books. Go ahead and storage all Knicks and knacks in pretty boxes. Memory boxes with old photos can be a great conversation starter with friends and family.

6. Books layout- Depending on the space available you can lay them in a neat row by colour coding them or you can stack them on top of each other.

Now, I don’t have that many books in my collection so colour coding was not for me. I have a pretty random collection so I decided to cover them with gift wrap that matched my theme. And then I went ahead and DIY-d the spines. Hand written spines in old lettering gave a very personal and creative spin to this  decor. Yes, my favourite book is The Secret.

And finally a cute photo of my little sunshine is a constant reminder that the best things in life are not things.

Hope you liked this post. I would love to see what you do with your book shelves.
